Forgiveness among the Lionheart men was slow. If they had been women they would have talked more and resolved things sooner. It took much time to ease the fury, build forgiveness and have a mild sense of understanding.
With the absence of Lady Yarrow Lord Richard has been most grieved. This effects his earning ability, leading to further disaster. One winter the Lionheart men moved into a hovel.
"Sons, we must pull together as a family. I need you to study hard and work as well."
Rising to the occasion Alexander and Henry nodded solemnly.
Richard became more proud of his sons than he had in all their young lives. It helped him push through his grief to work harder himself. If his sons were willing to work their way out of this hovel, he was not going to be the burden to hold them back.
One night he came home late from work to find Alexander in deep snow performing music for the king. At first he was proud to find his king audience to his son's talents. But as he drew nearer the hovel his eyes revealed another story.
This was clearly an attempt to earn money, and King Leon was clearly not enjoying it.
Pride and shame rose in the nobleman's chest.
"In honor of your mother."
Lord Richard hated to hear his wife spoken of as if she were dead. Hearing the King's coins fall in the jar behind his son brought both relief and shame in the nobleman.
Richard bowed to his king, then went inside his own "castle".
Oh Henry! He seems paler than ever in this cold room. His poor nose all tucked into the blanket like that.Richard rekindled the fire and heated up some water. He needed a bath to warm his own bones. He filled the tub and began removing his clothing.
The cold air seeping through the cracks in the wall gave him cause to hurry.
"Dear Lord," Richard whispered. "Please help me get on my feet, then send my Yarrow home to me. Amen."
